Textiles

Entry Guidance:

5 GCSEs at grades A* - C or equivalent , including a minimum of grade C in Textiles Technology GCSE (Higher Tier).  This course will only run if a sufficient number of students express an interest.

Syllabus Outline:

Students gain an increasingly in depth understanding of:

Textile materials; the working properties and applications of a wide range of fabrics and fibres;

Industrial and commercial products and practices, including the manufacture of textile materials and products for clothing, decorative and industrial applications;

Individual design and product development, following current trends and fashion influences;

The broader issues for the designer such as environmental sustainability of products, social influences and consumer safety.

Methods of Assessment:

AS

Unit 1: Materials and components - Written paper - 50% of AS, 25% of A Level
Unit 2: Learning Through Designing and Making - Coursework project or portfolio - 50% of AS, 25% of A Level

A2

Unit 3: Design and Manufacture - Written paper - 25% of A Level
Unit 4: Coursework - Project - 25% of A Level

General Comments:

This course is ideal for students who enjoyed and gained success at GCSE. Opportunities abound for individual creativity as students investigate textile materials and techniques. The product development element is a fantastic showcase for a wider variety of technical skills and design flair. Possible career paths related to this course include textile or fashion design, manufacturing and textiles technology.
