As a student in Garforth Academy Sixth Form, you will be assigned a form tutor. This person will be your first line in support throughout your time in College. You will have weekly tutorials in which your personal progress will be discussed, and after each reporting cycle your tutor will spend a day having more in depth interviews with each student. In this way we aim to support all our students through their different courses chosen. In particular, vocational students will find that their course tutor will also be their form tutor. The closer link should enable tutors to be more able to respond to students' needs quicker and more effectively.
In addition we have two Learning Mentors and a Study Support Coordinator whose role is to provide additional support for students who may be encountering certain challenges whether within their chosen course or external to College. We know that students who have the opportunity for positive support are students who will succeed, and that is our aim at Garforth, to help students to fulfil their potential.
Garforth Academy students benefit from a high level of Careers guidance and support. Mr Saker, Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance Co-ordinator (CEIAG), is located within the Sixth Form and helps students to make informed, well considered decisions on their futures. He works closely with Liz Aylott of Connexions/Prospects and between them they have a very good knowledge of
Both Mr Saker and Liz Aylott are available to students for Careers Interviews, both formally and informally.
The Academy has recently added a Careers area to the Sixth Form containing prospectuses, information of student finance, work experience and gap years, and a board displaying UCAS updates, University Open Day information, adverts for apprenticeships and job opportunities. The Careers area is also a study space, complete with computer access.
The Sixth Form Student Council is the means by which students in the Sixth Form can raise and address issues relevant to the Sixth Form. Members of the Sixth Form Council are elected by the Sixth Form. The Sixth Form Student Council is also an active participant in Charity Fund raising in College, and liaising with other student councils via the Family of Schools Councils. The Council also has the responsibility for organising social events for the Sixth Form.
