Qualification Gained BTEC First Diploma (equivalent to 4 GCSEs)

Introduction

A BTEC First Diploma is a practical, work-related course.  You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.

It introduces you to the employment area you have chosen and provides a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification.

A BTEC First Diploma is equivalent to four GCSEs grades A*- C.

Course Content

The course is made up of six units - two core units, which everyone takes, and four specialist units.  The specialist units enable you to study particular areas in more depth.

All students take the two core units:

  • Unit 1 - communication and individual rights within the health and social care sectors
  • Unit 2 - individual needs within the health and social care sectors

In unit 1 you will learn about effective ways of communicating your ideas. You will also find out what barriers there are to communication.

In unit 2 you will learn about the needs of individuals and look at factors that influence the health and needs of the individual

You will also take four specialist units from the following list:

  • Cultural Diversity in Health and Social Care
  • Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care
  • Human Lifespan Development
  • Creative and Therapeutic Activities in health and Social Care
  • Health and Social Care Services
  • The Impact of Diet on Health

Assessment Arrangements

The course is continually assessed - there is no final examination. All units are graded as pass, merit or distinction. Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a BTEC first diploma in health and social care.

Other Information

The course is an introduction to health and social care. It is well suited for those students who are considering a career in the caring professions or for those students wanting to work with people.
