The course provides a smooth transition from any of the GCSE Technology subjects. Students will be expected to have at least 5 GCSEs at Grade A* to C or equivalent, one of which must be grade C or above in a Technology subject. The course will only run if a sufficient number of students express an interest.

Studying industrial and commercial products and practices and also materials, components and systems will allow students to further develop specific areas within Design and Technology, Systems and Control, Graphics, Resistant Materials, 3D Design and Product Design.
Product development will allow students to cover all the skills related to designing and making through practical project work.
The AS comprises two units of assessment:
Unit 1 - Materials, components and application - written paper
Unit 2 - Learning through Designing and Making - coursework project
The A2 comprises a further two units of assessment:
Unit 3 - Design and Manufacture - written paper
Unit 4 - Design and Making Practice - coursework project
An A-level qualification will consist of the two AS units and the two A2 units.
Students who may wish to keep their career options open will find this course particularly suitable. This A-level will develop the skills acquired during their previous GCSE Technology subject.
The broad multi-disciplinary nature of Product Design calls upon candidates to demonstrate the transferability of their knowledge, understanding and skills, which makes it an ideal vehicle to assist candidates in developing their Key Skills.
The Department has good workshop and ICT facilities. Students will have the opportunity to work the latest CAD-CAM equipment. In order to be successful, there is a need to research widely and be prepared to work on a project outside normal contact time.
