Physical Education

Entry Guidance:

At least 5 GCSEs at Grades A* - C or equivalent, including English Language, Maths, Double Science and a grade B in GCSE PE. Students also need two strong practicalsports at a minimum of club standard. This course will only run if a sufficient number of students express an interest.

Syllabus Outline:

The syllabus contains four units of study.

The are two at AS level:

Unit 1: An introduction to Physical Education
Section A – Anatomy and Physiology
Section B – Acquiring Movement Skills
Section C – Socio- Cultural Studies

Unit 2: Acquiring, developing and evaluating practical skills in Physical Education.

There are four units in the A2 which include the above plus the following:

Unit 1: Principles and concepts across different areas of Physical Education
Section A – Historical Studies
Section B – Sports Psychology and Exercise Physiology

Unit 2: The improvement of effective performance and the critical evaluation of practical activities in Physical Education.

Unit 2 at both AS and A2 require candidates to be assessed in their practical performance in physical activities. This will involve two activities at AS and one at A2.

Unit 2 at both AS and A2 require candidates to analyse the performance of others in their chosen activities.

Methods of Assessment:

The AS forms 50% of the assessment weighting of the full A-level.

At AS Unit 1 will be assessed by a 2 hour written examination.

At A2 Unit 1 will be assessed by a 2½ hour written examination.

At AS and A2 Unit 2 is examined through coursework.

General Comments:

The course relates to the performer in Physical Education and sport and explores the interaction between theory and practice. The course is designed to suit students with a real interest and experience of Physical Education and sport. Many students have used the A-level qualification to go on to study Sports Science at University or follow a career in the field of sport.
