Human Biology SLA

AS Human Biology

Entry Guidance:

5 GCSEs at grade A*-C or equivalent

At least grade C at GCSE Science Core and Additional, and GCSE grade C in maths and English.  This course will only run if a sufficient number of students express an interest.

Syllabus Outline:

Unit 1: The body and its diseases
Unit 2: Humans – their origins and adaptations
Unit 3: Practical and investigative skills

At AS, the specification has adopted a thematic approach, in which principles are related to contemporary issues to provide greater stimulus and interest for students.

Methods of Assessment:

The course is modular.  Unit 1 and 2 exams are worth 40% of the course each. The remaining 20% consists of a combination of teacher assessment of practical skills during the course and an investigative skills assignment (unit 3).

General Comments:

The course builds on concepts and skills previously demonstrated at GCSE level.  The specification encourages candidates to acquire essential knowledge and develop an understanding of concepts in both Human Biology and ‘How Science Works’.

AS Human Biology would form a sound base of knowledge to accompany such courses as BTEC Sport and Health & Social Care.  It would also support applications to higher education courses.
