Geography

Entry Guidance:

5 GCSEs at grades A* to C or equivalent, including a grade B in Geography (higher tier). This course will run only if a sufficient amount of students express an interest.

Syllabus Outline:

The course follows the WJEC specification which contains:

AS level (Year 12)
Unit 1 – Changing Physical Environments
Two themes:

  • Investigating Climate Change
  • Investigating Tectonic and Hydrological Change

 

Unit 2 – Changing Human Environments
Two themes:

  • Investigating Population Change
  • Investigating Settlement Change

 

A2 level (Year 13)
Unit 3 – Contemporary Themes and Research in Geography
Unit 4 – Sustainability
Four themes:

  • Sustainable Food Supply
  • Sustainable Energy
  • Sustainable Waster Supply
  • Sustainable Cities

Methods of Assessment:

A variety of assessment techniques are used.

AS level (Year 12)
Both units are assessed by 1½ hour written examinations consisting of structured questions with stimulus material. One question in each examination will test fieldwork/research.
Preparation for the fieldwork/research question will take place during a residential fieldwork experience.

A2 level (Year 13)
Unit 3 is assessed by a 2¼ hour written examination. In Section A candidates select from a choice of essays. In Section B candidates answer questions based upon their research findings.
Unit 4 is assessed by a 1¾ hour examination, based upon a pre-released information booklet.

General Comments:

The course recognises the vital role geography has in the 21st Century curriculum. It encourages students to understand their own lives in a global world and to understand the vital, complex and inter-related issues they will face in their lives such as climate change, poverty and deprivation, global shifts in economic power and the challenge of sustainable resource use.
