English SLA

AS English Language/English Literature

Entry Guidance:

You will need 5 GCSEs at grades A* to C or equivalent with a minimum of grade C GCSE English Language and grade C in English Literature.  This course will only run if a sufficient number of students express an interest.

Syllabus Outline:

The aim of the course is to encourage and develop an enjoyment and understanding of English Language and Literature, offering students opportunities to develop their interest in both language and literature as interconnecting and mutually supportive disciplines. It allows students to develop as independent, confident and reflective readers and writers, giving a variety of opportunities to explore the relationship of language and literature through a wide range of reading opportunities, critical reading of and response to both literary and non-literary texts, as well as writing for a variety of audiences and purposes.

Methods of Assessment:

In Year 12 all students will undertake the study of three modules.  The first, Introduction to Language and Literature Study is intended as an introduction to a range of literary and non-literary texts in a small anthology, including the study of poetry.  In Module 2, The Changing Language of Literature, students look at the way language has changed through the study of a pair of texts, one being pre-twentieth century prose.  Each module is assessed through a 1½ hour examination, covering 35% of the total AS marks.  Module 3, Production of Texts is the coursework component of the examination, which requires candidates to engage in the production of their own texts for particular purposes and audiences. This covers 30% of the total AS marks.
The result of the first year's assessment will be the achievement of the AS level.  If successful here, with at least a grade C, the students will be able to continue onto Year 13 where they will study for the full A2 level.  This consists of three further modules:  Module 4, Text Transformation is the coursework component; Module 5, Talk in Life and Literature and Module 6, Critical Approaches are assessed through written examinations.

General Comments:

There are opportunities for AS/A2 students to work independently on aspects of language and literature.
