English Language

Entry Guidance:

5 GCSEs at grades A* to C or equivalent with a minimum of grade B GCSE English Language and grade B in GCSE English Literature.  This course will only run if a sufficient number of students express an interest.

Syllabus Outline:

The aim of the course is to encourage and develop an enjoyment and understanding of the systematic written and spoken structure and use of English Language involving the analysis of language in all its modes.Students look at the way language works, both in terms of the way it is put together and the way it affects other people.  In addition, students look at the way language shapes their own view of the world and other people.  Students learn to use these skills, not only to analyse others' langauge, but also to produce their own writing and undertake language inverstigations.

Methods of Assessment:

In Year 12 all students will  undertake the study of two modules.  The first, Seeing through Language, will look at written, spoken, electronic language, stylistic analysis of language and how children acquire language.  Module 2, Representation and Langage, is assessed as coursework.  The result of the first year's assessment will be the achievement of the AS level.  If the student is successful at this level they will be able to continue onto Year 13 where they will study for the full A2 level.  A 'C' grade at AS is preferable.  A2 consists of two further modules.  Language Explorations (exam) and Language Investigations and interventions (coursework)  are examined at the end of Year 13.

General Comments:

There are opportunities for AS/A2 students to work independently on aspects of language which interests them - in fact an independent investigative approach is crucial for a successful outcome.
