Skate Park set to open shortly in Garforth

Garforth Community College has helped to fund the new skateboard park in Garforth, along with Leeds City Council, Green Leeds, and the Easter Outer Area Committee.

The ??171,000 facility, currently being built on the recreation ground off Ninelands Lane  is expected to open shortly. It will consist of skateboard equipment, skating bowl, seating, planting and signage.

When open the skateboard park will be covered by the Parks Patrol service and there will be proper marshalling of the facility. Local young people were consulted on the project as were local residents. It is hoped that the project will provide a safe environment for young people to go and enjoy their leisure time.

Garforth Community College introduces Foundation Degrees

Headteacher Paul Edwards and senior managers at the College are currently drawing up plans to offer a range of courses to local residents from September. Classes would take place in four partner primary schools, where lectures and seminars would be taught principally by tutors and lecturers from Trinity and All Saints, a higher education College located in Horsforth, Leeds.

The Foundation degrees would initially include health and social related topics and teaching and learning support subjects and it is hoped that they will be available from September 2007. Foundation degrees take two years to complete but are often topped up by students to three years and full degree level can be acquired.

For all information on Foundation Degrees at Garforth Community College please contact Mr Paul Hirst, Deputy Headteacher, Research & Development, on 0113 2869091.

Garforth Student in Christmas Lights Switch on

Garforth Community College student Eleanor Watling, aged 14, was in the spotlight along with chart toppers McFly when the Christmas lights were switched on back in November 2006 in Leeds city centre. The band and Eleanor were also joined on stage by Leeds actress Gaynor Faye, fundraiser Jane Tomlinson and the cast members from Wizard of Oz, which was being staged at the West Yorkshire Playhouse.

Eleanor  made it onto the stage at the Lights switch on after winning the 'mayor for a ' competition, organised by the council as part of 'local democracy '
