Here at The South Leeds Academy we offer a range of construction courses which are available to all year 11 leavers wishing to take vocational courses in the 6th form. At our unique, purpose built Construction Centre, you will be encouraged to excel using state of the art equipment and trade specific industry training techniques. You will take part in innovative projects which include house building, inter school “skill build” competitions, and many more other exciting assignments as part of your course work. Based in the South Leeds area of Leeds, you will also be encouraged to seek out work experience in the local community which could lead on to full time employment upon completion of your chosen course. Training will be as work related and “real” as possible, giving you the feel of a live construction site. You will learn as young apprentices in the most exciting, versatile and largest industry in the UK.
First Certificate and First Diploma’s in Construction and the Built Environment
Features:
To provide the candidate with a broad knowledge, understanding and skill training to become qualified within Bricklaying, Carpentry and Joinery, or Painting and Decorating. The qualification is aimed at those individuals wishing to join the construction industry as trades-people on the above selected course.
This new qualification replaces the Intermediate Construction Award (ICA) to comply with the Sector Skills Council (SSC) requirement for broader training, as defined in the Construction Qualification Strategy (CQS).
Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying
Level 2 Diploma in Site Joinery
Level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating
4 GCSEs at grades A* to C or equivalent
These qualifications are available to anyone and are free from any barriers that restrict access and progression. However, the department head will only select learners with integrity and a strong will to succeed to follow any of the above courses. These courses will only run if a sufficient number of students express an interest.
Level 2 Diplomas
The Level 2 Diplomas cover six core units which include:
Carrying out safe working practices in Construction
Knowledge and Information, Quantities and Communicating with others
Building Methods and Construction Technology
Nine more units based around practical exercises in each craft.
Methods of Assessment:
Level 2 Diplomas
Assessment is demonstrated through oral examination, practical examination, and portfolio coursework, with an on-line knowledge test as a final completion.
