BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Music Practice (Performing)

Entry Guidance:

5 GCSEs at grades A* - C or equivalent, including grade C GCSE Music or Merit in BTEC First Music. Instrumental/Vocal Skills equivalent to Grade 5.  This course will run only if a sufficient amount of students express an interest.

Syllabus Outline:

This course is aimed primarily at students who are interested in developing practical music skills and might be considering a career in Music. It is a very practical course and is centred on music performance and related activities.
The six unit BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma is equivalent to one GCE A Level. It also attracts UCAS points in the same way as an A Level. Currently it is available as a two-year option.
Students are required to study 6 units over the 2 year course. Some units are assessed internally via portfolio work while others are externally assessed. A range of units are available within this qualification. Those currently offered are:

  • Live Performance Workshop
  • Improvisation
  • Music Performance Techniques *

Methods of Assessment

The course is structured around a number of assignments, some of which will be short-term (gigs, written projects) while others will require evidence of long-term progression (instrument lessons, improvisational skills etc.). Each unit has a learning content and outcomes that are clearly stated, and students will be kept informed of their progress.

General Comments

All students should be prepared to take advantage of the wide range of enrichment opportunities available at the College. It is compulsory for all students taking this course to regularly attend at least one extra-curricular activity each week.

It is essential that all students take regular instrumental/vocal lessons, as performing to a high standard and demonstrating and monitoring technical improvement are important aspects of the course. Lessons are available in College and further information is available from tutors.

Progression:

The BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Music Practice (Performing) provides a sound basis for students wishing to proceed to Higher education courses in Music. It can lead to careers in performing, teaching and composition, as well as related areas in publishing and media. It combines well with most other subjects including Theatre Studies and Music or Music Technology AS/A levels.
