BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Performing Arts (Acting)

Entry Guidance

5 GCSEs at grades A* to C or equivalent, including English Langauge and Drama or a pass in BTEC First Performing Arts.  Suitability of students will be assessed by course tutors during the application process.  The course will only run if a sufficient number of students express an interest.

Syllabus Outline

This two year course consists of six complementary units of work, focusing on vocational aspects of Performing Arts.
The Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma (equivalent to 1 ‘A’ level) is designed to

  • Develop learners’ practical ability through effective use and combination of the knowledge and skills gained from the course
  • To develop understanding and gain experience of performing arts in a broader context
  • Provide specialist studies directly relevant to the performing arts profession in which learners are working or intend to seek employment
  • Provide specialist studies directly relevant to the performing arts profession in which learners are working or intend to seek employment
  • Develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life
  • Provide a pathway into Higher Education

Methods of Assessment

Year 12

Unit 11 - The Principles of Acting
Unit 13 - Contemporary Theatre Performance
Unit 23 - Film and TV Acting
Unit 24 - Mime

All modules assessed through; Practical assignments (internal).  Written assignments including research and evaluation (internal).

Year 13

Unit 7 - Performing to an audience

Unit 9 - Devising Plays  or Unit 11 Theatre for Children


Both units assessed through; Practical and written assessments (external).

General Comments

This course is designed to prepare students wishing to enter the Performing Arts Industry, and provides an ideal grounding for students wishing to pursue further studies at a higher educational level.
